The Substation: Part 1

Built in 1915 and used for half a century to convert electricity for the railway, the Substation was left derelict for many years before being restored as a place for the arts.

I stand in the back room of the third floor, with a single window facing the railway junction. The last throes of a windstorm mark the beginning of an aural exploration of the Substation.

Parallels between the trajectory of the recording and the fragile 20-year-old tape become evident. The violence of the windstorm as it rips under the metal roof converges with the shrill screech of shedding tape. Buffeting air movement is met by the flickering degradation of the stereo image. And as the storm subsides the ever present magnetic haze comes to the fore.
