a recording I captured of some creaking Caledonian pines and wind noise from our trip to Mar Lodge. The recording was made with a single JrF c-series contact mic and a Røde shotgun microphone.

I remember traipsing through the foliage actively listening to the sonic phenomena of the wood, when I heard a wonderful creaking noise, which I knew to be the pines swaying in the wind. I ‘followed my ears’ until I came upon an especially loud tree, at which I found a small split in the trunk. I wedged my contact mic into this arboreal crevice and captured a few recordings primarily using a lone contact mic, but this track was recorded using a contact mic and shotgun mic in tandem. It feels at once both very tranquil and also very pensive.
