about

trace elements - a series of pieces, broadcast during 2020, drawing on works created from 2005-2020

the intention was to create a set of pieces that reflected relevant questions within my work with aspects of acoustic ecology / acoustic sociology, that in some way were being highlighted during the pandemic; 

#1 management of rural environments
#2 duration and the non-spectacle
#3 the urban border
#4 the sonic colonisation of ‘nature’
#5 artefacts and minerals
#6 edging into waters
#7 non-tourism

#6 - edges - as with all environments, listening to aquatic spaces and species, for me, is not about the acquisition of skill, measured by conventional hierarchical systems, but a challenge to such straight lines. Nor is it about some narrow sense of meditative tide. These are always places where a reliance on such things can inhibit the listening, the acceptance of our species’ sensory limits, and industrial impact. There is always more there.

The recordings used in this piece were recorded in Australia, specifically in the Bundeena national park region of New South Wales. My trip there followed several days in the Blue Mountains and a week at The Wired Lab, listening and leading a workshop of extended field recording.
