‘scores for listening’ is a concept i’ve been working on for many years - an extension of earlier photographic scores. These open scores act as visual hints towards immersive listening experiences and can be performed / realised by individuals or ensembles, with or without instruments. For these versions myself and the cellist Bethany Nicholson visited the reed beds along the river Humber where Bethany performed in the reeds, listening as she was surrounded by their constant, detailed wash of sounds. On score #80, I attached two JrF c-series contact mics to reed stems and Bethany listened, via headphones, to this sound whilst responding.

Bethany Nicholson

Bethany started playing the cello at the age of seven. Bethany achieved a 2.1 bachelor degree at the university of Hull in 2014. While at University, Bethany has lead and performed in a wide range of ensembles including the contemporary group ‘Ensemble Fractus’. Bethany has also performed in ensembles outside of the University such as the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra and Northern Musical Theatre Orchestra.
Following on she completed her Masters degree at the University of Hull specialising in performance and musicology. Her interest lies in postmodern and contemporary music, with particular regard to cello performance. Bethany has performed a number of world premiers, such as ‘Echo Wall’ for String Quartet and Trumpet, performed in Tianjin China in 2017. ‘O, Or what you will’ for Cello, Electronics, and Paper, performed in Middleton Hall in 2018 and ‘( )’ for Cello and Voice, performed at the Penny Arts Hill in 2018.
