iptamenos3 Breathtaking work. A category of its own, where words like "beautiful" or "ugly" (and all similar words) are meaningless.

This just ís. Sound. Breathtaking. Overwhelming.
  Favorite track: tuning.

drone2805 Jez Riley French has really outdone himself! With the headphones, these slow pieces reveal sumptuous and exhilarating subtleties. And when we think that the work is produced from the resonances that a surface emits when passing cars or in the presence of a ventilation system, it only becomes more original and extraordinary! WHAT A WEALTH OF FREQUENCIES AND WHAT HARMONY! I highly recommend. Favorite track: adagio.

Mr Fox I'm working on sound recordings myself. I also like the connection between this idea and Joseph Bueys' material about negative space in cities

about

these pieces are built from recordings of architectural spaces resonating, being sounded by orchestras and ensembles playing re-scored sections of adagios - a few seconds re-scored as durational performances

recorded using JrF c-series contact microphones and adapted geophones
on and around each location

this technique of using buildings as filters for sound performances, and in and of themselves, is one that I have developed over the past decade or so and stems from my interest in sounds not normally audible to us, and on how structures affect our sonic experience.

(nb. the cover of the cd version was printed some years ago when the first pieces in this series were ready for release. Ironically the amazing sonic resonances of the buildings involved were not ones that the various locations wanted the public to be fully aware of, especially as most are eminent concert halls and pride themselves on the acoustic accuracy of their spaces. So, that initial release was put on the shelf and no venues are listed here. The original printed cd cover somehow fits even more now with these newer pieces, a reference to that which is behind or below the surface.

The download version includes a bonus track 'prelude', which is the earliest work in the series, originally scheduled for the shelved release in 2015)

due to the complicated issues around permission naming the ensembles would be problematic, as it would give away locations. However I can reveal that all but one involved UK based ensembles, some at Universities and that the sessions were held as part of either workshops or informal, privately arranged exploratory sessions. I am grateful to all of the musicians for their time and for allowing this release without their names appearing, for now at least.
