about

sharing work focused on located sound, for me, can be almost immediate but usually involves a long process of listening back over the course of months or years.

this series, ‘instamatic’, features recordings that sit between documentary and an immediate intuitive play with microphones.

these recordings of a trip to japan in 2011 are ones that i put together in the form of a single track shortly after the trip. i’m not sure why I didn’t release them before now in this form (some elements also appear on the album suketchi) - that is part of the process; to not be sure sometimes - but listening to this recently retained a sense of connection to place and situation, and some personal questions around intention and perception. i’ve added a further piece based on the electromagnetics of vending machines in tokyo and a series of photographs from the trip, some of which also form photographic scores published in ‘if you so wish…’

 on another trip to Japan, with my daughter, the artist Pheobe riley Law, in 2018, Pheobe created a series of works, ‘tourist’, reflecting on that sense of being a visitor in a country for the first time whilst also being there for a creative purpose. her expression of that duality speaks more successfully about these recordings from my first trip to japan than I perhaps can currently.
